Paris City Guide
With its grandiose columns, elegant promenades, and luminous skyline, Paris is pure poetry manifested. The City of Lights isn't crowned the world's most romantic capital without reason, and with its myriad galleries, trendy cafes, and a love affair with the arts that is virtually unparalleled anywhere else on the planet, it's a dream destination that finds its way to virtually everyone's bucket list.
Situated in northern central France on the banks of the River Seine, Paris was founded by a Celtic people as far back as 3 BC. Since then, the French capital has been the stage for some of history's most iconic moments, including the French Revolution and World War II, and has emerged as both a mighty empire during colonial times as well as establishing itself at the forefront of arts, science, philosophy, literature, film, and music. Today, along with the city's passionate obsession with food and wine, Paris remains the cultural capital of Europe for these very disciplines.
An architectural paradise
While much of Paris has flourished and evolved organically, many of its districts and neighborhoods – as well as well-known sites in the central area – reveal a refined sense of city planning. This is most indicative when taking a helicopter tour around the dramatic Arc de Triomphe, forming a center from which several major roads taper outwards geometrically. With its strident arch and heroic neoclassical sculpture designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, it celebrates the courage and honor of the French soldiers who fought in the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Beneath it lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and it is heralded as a reverent memorial as well as a landmark.
Unsurprisingly – and for the very reason that its designer, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel criticized it – The Eiffel Tower is France's most distinctive landmark and can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city. The impressive 1889 World Fair structure is the most visited monument in the world and has been featured in countless films, not to mention being one of the most romantic visits for love-struck couples.
Another famous port of call is the gorgeous Gothic-style Notre Dame Cathedral. The ornate facade has captivated the imaginations of writers and artists alike for centuries. Visitors can delve even deeper into Paris's history, however, with a tour of the underground Paris Catacombs – “The World's Largest Grave” – where the remains of approximately 6 million people are laid to rest in winding passages beneath the city or take a tour of one of the historic cemeteries in Paris.
Stay above ground and visit what is arguably the world's most famous art museum – the legendary Louvre. There are 35,000 works of art on display, including the Mona Lisa, from regions across the world. Its palatial facade alone is impressive, and then there is the striking glass pyramid that juxtaposes against it beautifully.
When not paying homage to each of these art shrines individually, make the most of the breathtaking architecture with a serene river cruise, or one of the local walking tours (these are particularly enticing at night), where you'll discover the many mysteries behind the birth and life of this magnificent city.
A night at the opera
The Palais Garnier is the home of the Opéra National de Paris, and since its erection in 1875, it has endured some of the city's most turbulent times, only to re-emerge as a major center for all orchestral and operatic productions. It has seen some of the first performances of revolutionary operas from Gluck to Verdi. It also featured in The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, and remains one of the leading music venues of the classical world today.
Food and shopping
Ultimately, Paris is all about food and no matter where you are in the city you will always find a delightful place to eat. There are many cafes and patisseries serving freshly baked bread, croissants, macaroons and an array of delectable Parisian dishes accompanied by excellent wine.
Stroll along the famous Champs-Élysées and stop by one of the many beautiful shops for a unique souvenir. Or visit the Louvre-Tuileries and Faubourg Saint-Honoré for the finest in designer labels. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is another beguiling district, with many quirky bookstores and chic boutiques in abundance, and the city's markets also offer a diverse taste of various foods as well as crafted goods.
