Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, a unique small city in Europe with a distinct culture and architecture that creates a fairy tale-like setting. Prague’s population is a little over a million. 

The city has winding streets, making it easy to forget where you started and finding your way around can be tricky. The houses can also sometimes seem similar in certain parts so it’s good to use a map when exploring. It’s common for people to walk around the city. For tourists, it’s recommended to take the horse drawn tour of the city. Visiting Prague in the fall or winter is popular because it’s not as crowded so you can have time to see all of what this fascinating city has to offer.

Things to see and do

There is a lot to see and do in the city of Prague: most tourists visit the Old Time Square, a place that resembles a movie set. There are gothic buildings and a large medieval clock sits in a beautiful setting where visitors and local residents can take pictures. Visit another part of Prague and it might seem like you’re a part of a fairy tale at Disneyworld; beautiful castles, pastel painted buildings, and statues are common throughout the city. 

For art at its finest, check out the Municipal House. There are wonderful paintings throughout this building. Prague also has many churches to visit, and if you love architecture you can visit Prague’s impressive castle. 

There are a variety of shopping venues and malls in Prague, but for a relaxing moment with a taste of history, take a boat ride across the Vltava River and see the famous Charles Bridge. What is interesting about this bridge are the impressive arches and the stone structure. 

Prague residents like their sports. A popular sport is hockey. Since the Czech Republic experiences all four seasons, there are multiple sports played. Soccer is a popular participant sport in Prague. Other sports include handball, basketball, and volleyball. Visitors can usually see one or more of these games being played professionally, depending on the season. 

Culture

In Prague the main language is Czech, however, many of the people speak English. Other languages spoken are Russian and German, so it’s a good idea to know some basic Czech phrases if you do not speak those languages. A popular thing that people do in the evenings is to meet up at the St. Vincent statue to talk among each other about their day. Visit the National Museum or the castle museum for history, culture, and arts. The castle museum is a tall building with great views of the city.

How to get around

Most people get around the city center by walking, but you can catch public transport or taxis to get about. Bring walking shoes because you could spend hours exploring the city by foot. Don’t worry about renting a car; this city closes off streets to vehicles. 

From the airport it is recommended to take a bus to get to your destination. It you have to use a taxi, keep in mind that prices could get expensive. If you’re not used to walking long distances it is recommended to take public transportation. You can get tickets for the trams, the bus, or the metro for how many days you need. What and where to eat and drink 

There are a multitude of restaurants in Old Town Square. Visitors can try dumplings (knedliky), roast duck, and roast pork knee (koleno). When looking for a good beer, you’ll probably see pivo on the menu. For breakfast or dessert try palacinky, a local type of crepe. If you see goulash on the menu, know that it’s a soup with meat and vegetables.
